The lecture analysed not only current geopolitical shifts in the region, but also changing patterns in economic relations and foreign aid.

Congratulations! The English School Section of the International Studies Association has conferred the Award of Best Paper (Senior Scholar Category) to A/P William Bain. His paper “Excavating Presuppositions as an Approach to Normative Change” received a number of recommendations from across various panels and the committee was unanimous in their decision, seeing this paper as making an exceptional contribution to scholarship on English School theory, as well as wider debates around international ethics, order and society.

飞艇雪球计划聊天室Award of Harvard-Yenching Fellowship, and Interview on "Political Agenda: Fake News, Foreign Interference, and Freedom of Expression"

A/P Chong Ja Ian was awarded the Harvard-Yenching Fellowship for 2019-2020. This program offers faculty in the humanities and social sciences the opportunity to undertake 10 months of independent research at Harvard University relating to the humanities and social sciences with an emphasis on culture. He joins researchers at the Harvard-Yenching Institute and the Harvard community more broadly. A/P Chong will be working on a project examining how efforts by Asian states to hedge between the United States and China affect the relationship between Washington and Beijing.

Seperately, A/P Chong was also interviewed by the New Naratif on the topic of "Political Agenda: Fake News, Foreign Interference, and Freedom of Expression"

飞艇雪球计划聊天室“Fatalism is fatal for small states,” shared Mr Bilahari Kausikan (Arts and Social Sciences ’76) during his final FASS90 Political Science lecture on the Practice of Foreign Affairs on 3 April 2019. He spoke at length on how foreign and domestic policies intersect in Singapore, and the importance of having a population that understands foreign affairs. Mr Kausikan also warned of the dangers posed by foreign interference in domestic politics in the future, especially through social media. It was particularly relevant in light of the recently introduced Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Bill. #FASSPoliticalScience #FASS90

Cooperation key to good relations – Kausikan

飞艇雪球计划聊天室On 20 February 2019, Mr Bilahari Kausikan (Arts and Social Sciences ’76) presented the complex and sometimes tense bilateral relations Singapore has with Malaysia and Indonesia, while concisely describing the importance of understanding Singapore’s rather different relationship with each.

Beginning with a summary of previous diplomatic incidents between Singapore and its neighbours, he then discussed the factors that drive current diplomatic discussions. He stressed that Singapore “can cooperate with our neighbours, should cooperate, and in fact must cooperate” as far as possible while continuing to safeguard and advance national interests.

Bilahari Kausikan shares foreign policy insights in first of public lecture series

飞艇雪球计划聊天室On 30 Jan 2019, Bilahari Kausikan (Arts and Social Sciences ’76) spoke on the practice of foreign policy at NUS. He situated the fundamental role of national interests in foreign policy and explained why Singapore’s national interests are not better and more widely understood. He examined common errors in thinking about foreign policy, as well as the creation and maintenance of relevance for a small city-state like Singapore.

The inaugural lecture was presided by NUS President Professor Tan Eng Chye, Senior Deputy President and Provost Ho Teck Hua and FASS Dean Professor Robbie Goh.

A New Book on Twenty Years of Democracy in Indonesia

A/P Jamie S. Davidson has written a new book entitled published by Cambridge University Press (2018). In it he argues that understandings of post-Soeharto democracy in Indonesia are complicated when the country’s achievements and struggles are placed in comparative perspective. A/P Davidson was invited to discuss his latest book on Australian Broadcasting Company’s current affairs podcast “Counterpoint.”

There has been so much written about the liberal international order this past year. Its critics are piling on, and even its most enthusiastic cheerleaders have doubts. This article, however, suggests that the current hegemonic order is likely to be far more resilient than the pessimists believe. This is because the core ideas animating the current order — democracy and free markets — have far more popular support across the globe than elites tend to assume. Any Chinese effort to challenge or supplant the current order is therefore unlikely to gain many adherents.

Gaming and cheating in reporting performance accomplishments have become one of the most noticeable “diseases” plaguing public-sector reforms around the globe. Are reforms hitting the targets and missing the points? What are the causes and symptoms of gaming? How can gaming be reduced? What pitfalls and costs are associated with fighting against gaming? This two-day workshop aims to provide in-depth discussion on these issues. Book on asset building by NUS dons launched

飞艇雪球计划聊天室Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong launched "Critical Issues in Asset Building in Singapore’s Development" on 24 August, a book co-edited by Dr S Vasoo, Associate Professorial Fellow from NUS Social Work and Associate Professor Bilveer Singh from NUS Political Science that documents the instrumental role played by asset building in the country’s growth and development. In attendance were Mr Ong Ye Kung, Minister for Education and Professor Robbie Goh, NUS Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) Dean.

Political Science and Global Studies Graduation Party 2018

The first-ever NUS Political Science and Global Studies Graduation Party will take place in the Blue Room of the historic Arts House. The Blue Room was formerly the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Room, where MPs rest between debates. The adjoining small room was where then-PM LKY and the underground Communist chief, Fong Chong Pik held secret meetings. This was also where Mr Lee discussed strategies with his Old Guard ministers to take on the opposition Barisan Socialis in debate.

飞艇雪球计划聊天室Professor Shamsul Haque has been appointed as Adjunct Chair Professor for three years (2017-2020) at the College of Social Sciences, National Chengchi University, Taiwan. This is an honourable invited appointment, which involves delivering public lectures, presenting seminars, meeting with faculty members and graduate students, and pursuing joint research and publication. Best Article in European Journal of International Relations (EJIR) Prize

Congratulations! Prof Ted Hopf's article ‘Change in International Practices’ has been awarded the EISA prize for Best Article in European Journal of International Relations (EJIR) 2017.

On 21st March 2018, the Department of Political Science was honoured to host a Guest Lecture by H.E. Dr Ulrich A. Sante, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Singapore. The talk titled “Germany in Europe – Singapore in South-East Asia: Paving the Road to a More Strategic partnership” offered valuable practitioners’ insights into the world of diplomacy. Global Studies and Political Science students, NUS Alumni, and Guests from other universities and institutions in Singapore attended the event. The lively Q&A session continued over light refreshments.

Our PhD candidate, Manali Kumar, has been awarded a Swiss Government Excellence Research Scholarship for AY2018-2019. She will continue her research on the possibility of prudence in the formulation of foreign policy and grand strategy at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland for the duration of her Scholarship.

The GL4102 Task Force on plastic waste will have its report and recommendation published with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and representatives of the team have the honour of being invited to a Europe-Asia conference in Poland through the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) in October 2018.
